Summertime in New York City is about to get sweeter as the Lower East Side gallery, Olympia, prepares to host a unique one-night exhibition titled CAKE. This event will showcase and offer guests the opportunity to indulge in artist-made desserts generously donated by 33 New York-based artists. The show not only serves as a fundraising feast for the gallery but also as a participatory performance art experience.
The concept of CAKE was inspired by a series of serendipitous events, including artist Heather Benjamin’s cupcake display at her solo show’s closing. Olympia’s founder, Ali Rossi, envisioned a community-centric event that would bring artists together for a single night of celebration and creativity. The exhibition space will be transformed into a pink, sweet box-like setting on the upper level, reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Each dessert will be meticulously documented through photography before guests indulge, allowing the artists’ creations to live on beyond the ephemeral event. Melissa Joseph, a Brooklyn-based artist and Uovo Prize winner, will debut her felt-based practice translated into cotton candy at CAKE. Renowned cake artist Madeline Bach, known as the Frosted Hag, will present a vanilla cardamom sponge cake among other delectable treats.
For Bach and her contemporaries, baking has become a creative medium that continues to evolve and push stylistic boundaries. The enduring appeal of cake as an art form transcends fleeting trends, providing artists with a unique platform to showcase their talents and engage with audiences in unexpected ways.
CAKE not only challenges traditional exhibition formats but also serves as an experiment in crowdfunding and community-building. The event aims to create a space where rules are flexible, encouraging both artists and guests to embrace spontaneity and interaction. Rossi envisions CAKE as a platform for exploring new avenues of artistic expression and consumption.
As guests gather at Olympia on June 28th for this immersive experience, they will not only savor delectable desserts but also witness the intersection of art, performance, and culinary creativity. The blend of music, drinks, and artistry promises to make CAKE a memorable and vibrant celebration of New York’s artistic community.
CAKE represents a departure from traditional gallery exhibitions, offering a dynamic and inclusive space where creativity knows no bounds. By bringing together a diverse group of artists and art enthusiasts for a night of indulgence and artistic exploration, Olympia’s CAKE promises to be a feast for the senses and a testament to the power of collaborative expression.
